The Rabbit Hole

The Rabbit HoleAnother reason for taking the Avenue of the Giants detour was to go on a quick hike before getting to camp. I had looked before we left Las Vegas and found the Drury-Chaney Loop Trail.  This trail literally transports you to another world.  It could be bright mid-day at the trail head, and in a matter of minutes you were engulfed in dim filtered light.  It was really hard to get pictures of the treetops and sky.  Most either blew out the sky or had serious fringing.  This one is different.

Instead of concentrating on the tallness of the trees I found it amazing to see this example of the recycling ability of mother nature at work.  Here you see a huge fallen redwood being consumed by a variety of mosses, ferns, and clovers.  This was common on all the older fallen trees.  This tree was particularly popular.  If you look closely you can see a faint trail left from people wanting a photo op.  While I don’t like leaving trails in areas like this it helped add an additional piece to the photo, it leads to the rabbit hole.
