When traveling in northern California along US-101 there are two scenic drives that are absolute must sees if you’re hunting redwoods.
The first is the popular Avenue of the Giants. The Avenue of the Giants is an approximately 32 mile long historical US-101 alignment that is now signed as CA-254 which runs through the heart of redwood country and Humboldt Redwoods State Park.
The second is the lesser known Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway. Similar to Avenue of the Giants, Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway is also a historical US-101 alignment but only runs 10 miles through Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. Named in memory of Newton Bishop Drury (April 9, 1889 – December 14, 1978) who was the fourth director of the American National Park Service and the executive director of the Save-the-Redwoods League, this scenic parkway is every bit as amazing as Avenue of the Giants.
I’ll be sharing several shots from this amazing 10 mile stretch of asphalt over the next few days (map).
