My daughter and I decided to make a trip out to see Boy Scout Tree in Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park. To get there required a quick drive up Howland Hill Road which is always a treat. Along the way I noticed this old decaying Redwood stump. What drew me to it was all the small ferns that had started to grow out of it. Interestingly, this isn’t a unique phenomenon. Walk any trail in one of the Redwood parks and you’ll certainly see a fallen redwood with a healthy amount of vegetation growing out of the fallen giant (map).
